Mrs. Osaretin Demuren

September 2018 – August 2021

Mrs. Demuren was President from September 2018 to August 2021; she was also the first female Chairman, Board of Directors of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. 

Prior to joining the board of the GT Bank in 2013, Mrs. Demuren had a successful career with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which spanned about 33 years and was the first female Director of CBN. She served as the Director, Trade and Exchange Department and was deployed to serve as the Director, Human Resources Department in 2004, a position which she held until her retirement from the Central Bank of Nigeria in December 2009.

Mrs. Demuren holds a Master’s Degree in Economics and Statistics from the Moscow Institute of Economics and Statistics, Moscow, and a Diploma in Russian Language and Preliminary Studies from Kiev State University, Kiev.

Professor Chris Ogbechie

July 2017 – September 2018

Professor Ogbechie served on the Board of BDAN as President from July 2017 to September 2018 and during this period, he was the Chairman, Board of Directors, Diamond Bank Plc.
On January 1, 2021, he became the fourth Dean of Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University where he has responsibility for setting the strategic direction for the School, as well as overseeing all academic and administrative matters.

He is also a Professor of Strategic Management and a visiting professor at Strathmore Business School, Nairobi, Kenya.

Professor Ogbechie has a first-class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manchester University, an MBA from Manchester Business School and a PhD in Business Administration from Brunel Business School in the UK.

Sir Steve Omojafor, OON

2015 – July 2017

Sir Omojafor was the President from 2015 to July 2017 and during this period, he was the Chairman, Board of Directors, Zenith Bank Plc.

Sir. Omojafor is an accomplished marketing communication, advertising expert, and holder of the national award of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN). His extensive knowledge of mass communication and social marketing is invaluable to the national response to mitigating HIV, Tuberculosis and other communicable diseases.

Sir. Omojafor earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the prestigious department of Mass Communication at the University Of Lagos, Nigeria in 1972 – specializing in marketing communications. He has also attended several advertising seminars and workshops in the United States of America including a short programme at Columbia University, New York; Australia, Holland, United Kingdom and around Africa.

Olor’ogun (Dr.) Sonny F. Kuku

November 2011 – 2015

Dr. Kuku was the President of the Association from November 2011 to 2015 while he was Chairman, Board of Directors, Ecobank Nigeria Limited.

He is a Master Physician and Endocrinologist, renowned Scholar and Administrator. He holds several degrees and Fellowships in medicine, including two doctorates. He has been the Joint Chief Medical Director and Co-Chairman at the EKO Hospital (Ekocorp Plc) which he co­founded in 1978.

Dr. Kuku has been a Trustee and a Distinguished Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, President and Trustee West African College of Physicians, President of the Pan African Diabetes Study Group and President of the Nigerian NCD Alliance.

He also was Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities and Committee of Chairmen of Federal Tertiary Hospitals, the first African Honorary Fellow of the Colleges of Physicians of South Africa and Glasgow, and holds an Honorary DSc Ed (TAUSED).

Additionally, Dr. Sonny F. Kuku is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science and was awarded the National Honour of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (OFR) in 2003.

Chief Ferdinand N. Alabaraba

December 2009 – November 2011

Chief Alabaraba was the President of the Association from December 2009 to November 2011 while he was Chairman, Board of Directors United Bank for Africa Plc. 

Late Mrs. Moronkeji Olabisi Onasanya

July 2006 – December 2009

Late Mrs. Onasanya was the President of the Association from July 2006 to December 2009 while she was Vice Chairman, Skye Bank Limited. She was a Chartered Accountant by profession who graduated from Waltham Forest Technical College, now South-East London University where she studied Accounting.

Mrs. Onasanya was also a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA). She qualified as a Management Accountant in 1968 and as Chartered Certified Accountant in 1969 and worked in London, UK as a Cost Accountant before returning home.

On her return to Nigeria, she joined the UAC Group as an Accountant and held various positions at the Head Office and at the Divisional levels.

In 1992, she was appointed the Executive Director, Finance of the UAC Group and retired eight years later in 2000. As a professional Accountant, she served as Local Correspondent of the ACCA for several years and as Country Representative on the International Assembly for five years.

Late Mrs. Onasanya also served on the Governing Council of ICAN for nine years and she was given the Institute’s Merit Award in April 2010.

Alhaji Aliyu A. Salman (SAN)

2004 – 2006

Late Alhaji Salman was the President of BDAN from 2004 – 2006. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1968 and started his career as Counsel at the Sokoto State Ministry of Justice, where he rose to the position of Deputy Solicitor-General. He was subsequently appointed as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kwara State in 1975, until he resigned in 1978 to establish his private law firm, SARAA Chambers, which to the late doyen’s credit, has produced numerous judicial officers and senior members of the Bar. He was admitted into the inner Bar on 27 February 1987, the second indigene of Kwara State to be so elevated, and third from Northern Nigeria. 

Prof. Green Nwankwo

2002 – 2004

Professor Nwankwo was the President of the Association from 2002 to 2004 while he was Chairman, Board of Directors, African Continental Bank Limited.

Prof. Nwankwo is a Nigerian scholar and traditional ruler who has authored many books about banking and finance in Nigeria. He was educated at St. Peter’s Central School, Onitsha and also attended Scottish College of Commerce, Glasgow; London School of Economics, University of London and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

He was a lecturer and later became the Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, University of Lagos. Professor Nwankwo was Pioneer Executive Director, Monetary and Banking Policy, Central Bank of Nigeria; past Chairman, Union Bank Plc, ACB International Bank Plc; past Director, Chartered Bank Plc; Ocean Fisheries Ltd Chairman, Evergreen Associates; Kaba Nigeria Ltd etc.
